SET FOR FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTICS OF THE RETINA

(WHITE-RED-BLUE) + ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (NUV)

SET FOR FUNCTIONAL RETINAL DIAGNOSTICS: WHITE-RED-BLUE + FLASHLIGHT FOR FLUORESCEIN TEST: ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (NUV)

Three portable flashlights: WHITE-RED-BLUE, with LEDs installed in them, emitting light of a strictly defined wavelength which is used for conducting a functional retinal test.

The method is similar to the test for checking the pupil reflex: after adapting the animal in the dark for 1-2 minutes, the penlight, with the corresponding led, is turned on at a distance of 5-10 cm from the animal's eye, directing the light beam directly into the pupil for 2-3 seconds. The researcher evaluates: The SPEED of pupil contraction (fast, slow, absent); the AMPLITUDE of pupil contraction (complete, incomplete, absent).

After that, the researcher compares the parameters of the pupillary reflex (speed and amplitude) when stimulated by RED and BLUE light; and makes a corresponding conclusion about the normal or abnormal functioning of various layers of the retina (the layer of photoreceptor cells – "RED reflex" and the layer of ganglion cells – "BLUE reflex").

A penlight with a WHITE led gives a bright white light and is used for preliminary assessment of the condition of the studied eye, to exclude gross pathologies and the presence of a pupil reflex, as such. Also, it can be used as a portable diagnostic illuminator for any research (ophthalmic, ear-throat-nose, etc.).

Flashlight for fluorescein test: ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT (NUV) is a portable illuminator with an installed UV LED that emits light of a strictly defined wavelength in the near-ultraviolet spectrum.

For the diagnosis of eye injuries, the conjunctival cavity or cornea is applied to the ophthalmic dye sodium fluorescein, after which, the excess dye is thoroughly washed off with a saline solution. In contact with damaged tissues, sodium fluorescein is retained on the de-epithelized surfaces of the cornea or conjunctiva.

A flashlight for the fluorescein test is turned on by directing a beam of light at the test eye, from a distance of 15-30 cm. The ultraviolet light emitted by the flashlight causes a bright fluorescence of even the smallest amount of fluorescein that has been sorbed by damaged tissues. The fluorescence caused by the flashlight is clearly visible in natural light, but it is even more noticeable in a darkened room.
